They accept the circumstances amid which fate has thrown them not only with resignation but even with good will. The are like streetcars running contentedly on their rails and they despise the sprightly flitter that dashes in and out of the traffic and speeds so jauntily across the open country. I respect them; they are good citizens, good husbands, and good fathers, and of course somebody has to pay the taxes; but I do not find them exciting. I am fascinated by the men, few enough in all conscience, who take life in their own hands and seem to mould it to their own liking. It maybe that we have no such thing as free will, but at all events, we have the illusion of it. At a cross-road it does seems to us that we might go either to the right or the left, and the choice once made, it is difficult to see that the whole course of the world’s history obliged us to take the turning we did. 自己考完后沒當回事，春節前坐在回家的火車上聽MP3，無意中聽到這么一段，回去后趕緊翻書（書名《英文誦典·每天都要讀的名家散文》（中英對照+MP3）/風云英語策劃中心欒桂鳳編譯---北京·化學工業出版社，2010.12），原來這是英國作家威廉. 薩默賽特.毛姆（William Somerset Maugham)的一篇小散文，參考譯文如下： 大多數人的生活，都由他們所生活的環境決定。他們對于命運扔給的環境，不僅順從而且還很樂意地接受。他們就像電車一樣在既定的軌道上滿足的馳騁，并且對那些敏捷地出沒于車水馬龍中、歡樂地奔跑于荒野上的廉價小車不屑一顧。我尊敬他們，因為他們是好人民、好父親和好丈夫，當然總得有人來支付稅收。但是，我并沒有發現他們有令人興奮之處。我為另一些人所深深吸引，他們將自己的命運掌握在自己手中，并且按其所好創造喜歡的生活，但這樣的人畢竟是少數。也許，我們并沒有所說的自由意志，但是不管怎樣，我們總有那種幻想。在一個交叉口，對我們來說，我們可向左，可向右。但是一旦做了決定，我們卻很難意識到，其實整個世界的歷史進程迫使我們做出了這個改變。 |
